ART 1110 Foundation Drawing 1
Every artwork I chose to display on this page has a common factor. I chose them because I love the diversity of each piece.
"Angelic Butterfly"
Title: Angelic Butterfly
Date: Early February 2012
Medium: Graphite on paper
My subject was lent to me by my sister. She has several butterflies displayed in shadowboxes. I’ve drawn several, but this was my favorite.
I chose this piece because I loved capturing the intricate detail of this butterfly. I learned that slight shadows could be accomplished by sanding the tip of a graphite pencil with sandpaper. I then rubbed a paper-towel in the sanded bits of graphite. After that I used a scrap piece of paper to rub my graphite paper-towel on until the graphite came off evenly. Then I was able to use my newfound tool on my drawing without any problems. I used this effect to create my butterfly’s shadow.

"The Odd Cup"
Title: The Odd Cup
Date: Early April 2012
Medium: Charcoal on paper
I selected this drawing because I loved the contrast between the two textures. The cup was made of metal and the jar was made of twisted glass. I named this piece “The Odd Cup” because it reminds me of the unique items my family drinks from when we go camping.
On this piece I learned how to capture highlights and shade on a
transparent subject.

"Maui's Pride and Joy"
Title: Maui’s Pride and Joy
Date: April 2012
Medium: Charcoal on paper
The subject is of my dog Maui’s rawhide. She loves her bones. If she could speak I think she would agree that this picture is properly
named!
I selected this drawing because I enjoyed the composition. I learned that angling the rawhide really added interest to this relatively simple subject.

"Oh Horatio"
Title: Oh Horatio
Date: Late March 2012
Medium: Charcoal on paper
When I see a skull I can’t help but think of the famous Shakespeare line, “Oh Horatio I knew him well.”
I chose this piece because I loved how dramatic it turned out. It’s definitely eye catching.
On this drawing I learned how to overcome my fear of drawing new
things from difficult angles. I could have drawn this skull from the backside (or straight on), but I realized there wouldn't be any fun in that. True artists create works that are interesting to behold. I found that I can surprise myself by pushing my limitations.

"Joplin"
Title: Twister
Date: Mid April 2012
Medium: Charcoal on paper
I named this piece Twister for obvious reasons. I chose this picture because I find the symmetry peaceful.
I learned that abstracts are a delightful way to relax and let your imagination wonder.

"Here's Look'n at You"
Title: Here’s Look’n at You
Date: Late April 2012
Medium: Charcoal and graphite on paper
I have to admit that teddy bears melt my heart. That’s one of the reason’s
I chose this picture.
As for things I learned… I learned that in some cases graphite and charcoal can mix. 99% of this picture was done with charcoal. I used a graphite pencil to add the fur texture as to stay true to my subjects light blond faux fur. If I had used a
charcoal pencil for the teddy bear’s fur (like I did for the teddy bear drawing below) it would have turned out to look more like a brown bear.

"I Count You Twice"
Title: I Count You Twice
Date: Mid April 2012
Medium: Charcoal on paper
I chose this piece because I think it’s completely adorable. I really think I captured my teddy bear's essence. On this drawing I learned how to create realistic straight fur.
